What the checker is doing
The checker scales your image to cover the 2560 x 1440 frame, then draws the TV, desktop and safe-area outlines. YouTube's own safe-area number is 1235 x 338 at 2048 x 1152; at 2560 x 1440 that is about 1544 x 423 in the centre.
A worked example
An old 1024 x 576 banner is below the 2048 x 1152 minimum and would be rejected as is. Scaled up it uploads, but it can look soft; rebuild text layers at full size where you can. Keep JPG exports under 6 MB at 85 to 90% quality.
