Instagram character counter
Live counts for the caption (2,200), bio (150) and username (30), measured the way Instagram counts them. Everything runs in your browser; nothing you type is stored or sent anywhere.

Instagram character limits in 2026
Hashtags count toward the 2,200 characters, and since December 18, 2025 Instagram allows only 5 hashtags per post or reel (the old cap was 30), so the counter keeps a live hashtag tally next to the character count.
| Field | Limit | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Caption | 2,200 | hashtags, mentions and emoji included |
| Bio | 150 | profile bio |
| Username | 30 | handle |
| Hashtags per post | 5 | since December 18, 2025; the old cap was 30 |
How Instagram counts characters
Instagram counts every character of the caption, including spaces, line breaks, hashtags, mentions and emoji, against 2,200.
Where the Instagram feed cuts your caption
The feed shows roughly the first 125 characters of a caption before "... more". The other 2,000+ characters are optional reading that only a tap reveals.
Put the hook, the question or the biggest benefit inside those first 125 characters, and keep hashtags at the end so they never push the hook behind the cut. The counter highlights the 125-character mark live, so you can see exactly which words survive.
The same text on other networks
One draft gets a different number on every network, because each one counts differently. Here is how the Instagram limit compares.
| Network | Main limit | How it counts |
|---|---|---|
| TikTok | 2,200 (caption) | UTF-16 units; 4,000 in the app, 2,200 via API |
| Threads | 500 (post) | UTF-16 code units; links at full length |
| 63,206 (post) | every character; See more cut varies by device |
