A worked example
Take a typical iPhone photo, 4032 x 3024 (4:3):
- Square post (1080 x 1080): the full height is kept, the width is cut to 3024 px, so about 25% of the width is lost before scaling to 1080 x 1080.
- Portrait post (1080 x 1350): the full height is kept, the width is cut to 2419 px, so about 40% of the width is lost before scaling to 1080 x 1350.
- Tallest feed post (1080 x 1440): the full height is kept, the width is cut to 2268 px, so about 44% of the width is lost before scaling to 1080 x 1440.
- Story / Reel (1080 x 1920): the full height is kept, the width is cut to 1701 px, so about 58% of the width is lost before scaling to 1080 x 1920.
The resizer draws that cut on your own file before you export, so you can drag the frame to keep the subject in view.
What the tool is doing
It reads the pixel size of your file in the browser, draws it on a canvas, crops it to the shape you pick and re-encodes it at the exact export size. There is no upload request, and metadata such as EXIF location is not carried over.
Image shape and attention in the feed
Most Instagram browsing happens on phones, where a taller image takes more of the screen. A portrait 4:5 image is the tallest shape most feeds show without cropping, so it holds attention longer than a wide landscape one. The format gets the post noticed; the reactions it earns in the first hours decide how far it goes.
