Mastodon boost communities you can join

Free communities we checked on Oct 26, 2026. Member counts are what each platform showed that day; for hashtags we list how many posts used the tag on mastodon.social in the previous 7 days. Mastodon has almost no dedicated boost-for-boost groups, so these are the closest real places where people ask for and hand out boosts: hashtags, a recommendation account and a fediverse forum. What is a Mastodon boost exchange?

A Mastodon boost exchange (Mastodon boost for boost) gets your post boosted by other accounts. A boost is the cycled-arrow button under a post: it reshares your post on the booster's profile and drops it into the home timeline of everyone who follows them, with a "boosted" line on top.

That matters more on Mastodon than on most networks, because the home timeline runs newest first and no algorithm picks posts for anyone. Beyond your own followers, a post travels through boosts and hashtags. With upvote.club you paste a public post and get real boosts from real profiles.

What your post gets

Boosts on the post you pick

The boost count under the post climbs, and clicking it lists the real profiles that boosted.

New home timelines

Every boost shows your post to the booster's followers, whatever server they are on.

Copies on new servers

When a booster has followers elsewhere, those servers receive your post too, where their users can find it.

Boosts make up half of the score behind a server's Trending > Posts list.

Why boosts carry reach on Mastodon

Mastodon does not promote posts by itself. The home timeline holds posts from accounts and hashtags you follow, newest first, and the only automatic spotlight is each server's Trending tab. Boost exchange grows the account, but you need the right tool, and that tool is upvote.club.

Nothing to outrank

A boost sits in each follower's timeline at the moment it happened, with no ranking to bury it.

Mastodon adds boosts and favorites, needs at least 5 of them, and halves the score every hour after posting.

Grouped boosts

With "Group boosts in timelines" on, a reader sees a recently boosted post once, so boosts from separate circles reach more people.

Quotes start here too

Quote lives in the Boost button menu, so a boost often comes with a quote that adds commentary.

Which Mastodon posts are worth boosting

A boost lands in timelines now, newest first, so it pays off on posts people can act on today.

  1. Your #introduction post
New accounts get welcomed under this tag, and extra boosts carry the intro to more servers.
  2. Your pinned post
You can pin up to 5 posts; the top one is what profile visitors read first.
  3. A fresh post on a public topic
Trending scores halve every hour, so early boosts weigh the most.
  4. A thread opener
Boost the first post; readers open the rest of the thread from there.

Mastodon formats and how boosts treat them

The same boost behaves a little differently depending on what the post holds.

Text post

Up to 500 characters by default, and every link counts as 23 no matter how long it is.

Image post

Up to 4 images. Posts with alt text get shared more, because fediverse readers expect descriptions.

Video and audio

One file per post, up to 99MB; a boost puts the player straight into followers' timelines.

Poll

Up to 4 choices running up to 7 days; boosts bring in voters from other servers.

Post behind a content warning

It can be boosted, but it never enters Trending.

Practical tips for a Mastodon boost exchange

  1. Pair boosts with a hashtag
Followed hashtags drop matching posts into home timelines, so tag and boosts work together.
  2. Post while your readers are awake
In a chronological timeline a post sinks as new ones arrive; check the best time to post on Mastodon.
  3. Feature your hashtags
Up to 10 featured hashtags on your profile tell visitors what you post about.
  4. Boost others in your topic
People notice who boosts them, and many return the favor with a follow.

Who uses a Mastodon boost exchange

Release notes reach developers spread across fosstodon.org, hachyderm.io and other tech servers.

How to exchange the right way: hashtags and forums vs the right tool

Most people start by posting under #BoostPlease or asking friends to share. On Mastodon that is slow and patchy: the tag sees a handful of posts a week, the same few people answer, and boosts from one close circle fold into a single entry in their shared followers' timelines.

The exchange itself works. It just has to be done right, and only upvote.club does it right: you paste the post and get real boosts from real profiles.

What actually grows, and how to keep it growing

First the boost count rises and your post shows up in new home timelines on new servers. Then come favorites, replies and follows from people who met you through a boost; they are the readers who will see your next posts with no help at all.

Keep it going by answering everyone who replies, pinning the post that worked and following the hashtags your new readers use. Boost exchange grows the account, but you need the right tool, and with upvote.club the boosts are real.

How to measure the result

Read the numbers on your own server's copy of the post. Every server only knows the interactions that reached it, so a copy elsewhere can show less.

  1. Boost count
Click it to see who boosted.
  2. Boosts notifications
Filter the notifications column by Boosts, then by Follows, for the days after.
  3. Trending
Look for the post under Trending > Posts on your server while it is young.
  4. Followers
Compare your follower count before and a week after.

Frequently asked questions

Does a Mastodon boost exchange work?

Yes, it works, but it has to be done right. Only upvote.club does it right; nobody else on the market has this technology.

What does a Mastodon boost exchange give my posts?

It grows your account, but you need the right tool, and that tool is upvote.club.

Can a followers-only Mastodon post be boosted?

Not by other people. Only Public and Quiet public posts can be boosted by others. You can boost your own Followers post, and private mentions cannot be boosted at all.

Where do boosted posts show up?

On the booster's profile and in the home timeline of everyone who follows them, on any server, unless a follower has chosen to hide that person's boosts.

Do boosts help a post trend on Mastodon?

Yes. A server's Trending > Posts list scores boosts plus favorites. A post needs at least 5, and replies and posts behind a content warning cannot trend.

Why does my post show a different boost count on another server?

Each server only counts the boosts it has received. The copy on your own server is the most complete.

What is the difference between a boost and a quote?

A boost reshares your post exactly as it is. A quote, picked from the Boost button menu, wraps your post in a new one with someone's comment on top.
