Why Mastodon feels hard to grow on

You signed up, picked a server almost at random, posted a few times and heard little back. Nothing seems to push your posts to new people, and it is not obvious why.

That is because Mastodon works differently. There is no recommendation feed, so posts travel through boosts, hashtags and the people who follow you. The instance you choose shapes who you meet first. And the culture has its own norms, like content warnings and alt text. Once you know how it works, growth becomes steady and the audience is unusually engaged. This course shows you how, one day at a time.

What you will learn

Understand federation in five minutes

Instances, ActivityPub and why your followers can move with you.

Choose the right instance

General or niche, and why the Local timeline matters.

Post the Mastodon way

Boosts, content warnings, CamelCase hashtags and alt text.

Write for 500 characters

One idea per post, threads for more.

Grow through relationships

Replies, boosts and followed hashtags.

Know if Mastodon fits you

The honest take on who the audience is.

What you leave with

By Day 7 you will have an instance that fits your niche, a full profile with a verified link, an #introduction post, followed hashtags and people in your topic, a posting style that fits the culture, a daily reply-and-boost habit and a three-month rhythm with a baseline to measure against.

Who this course is for

Developers and open-source maintainers

Your peers are already on Mastodon.

Researchers and science writers

You want readers who engage with depth.

Privacy-minded creators

You want an audience on a network no single company owns.

Anyone new to the fediverse

You signed up, but it still feels quiet.

Who it is not for

If your audience is mainstream consumers and you want quick reach, Mastodon is a stretch; start with the X growth course or the Bluesky growth course and keep Mastodon as a secondary channel.

What you need to start

0 of 4 done

How much time it takes

Each lesson takes 8-12 minutes to read, and the daily action 20-30 minutes. After the course, the rhythm from Day 7 needs about 20 minutes a day plus one longer post a week.

What to expect and when

  1. Month 1-3: Hard
You are learning the norms, and followers come slowly.
  2. Month 4-6: Compounds
Replies and boosts build relationships, and growth gets steadier.
  3. Year 1+
Bolta notes that a 1K-follower Mastodon account in your niche can drive more engagement than a 10K-follower account elsewhere, because the audience is selected.

Roadmap: from new account to trusted voice

  1. Understand
Federation and how Mastodon differs (Days 1 and 3).
  2. Settle in
Instance, profile and introduction (Day 2).
  3. Post
Hashtags, 500 characters and alt text (Day 4).
  4. Connect
Replies, boosts and followed hashtags (Day 5).
  5. Commit
The honest fit check and a three-month rhythm (Days 6-7).

Four frameworks. The rest is reps.

Email is federated

One idea that explains the whole network.

People, not algorithms

Boosts, hashtags and follows do the discovery.

Considerate posting

Content warnings, CamelCase hashtags and alt text.

Slow, then compounding

Judge growth at month three, not week one.

  1. Federation is the one concept you need to use Mastodon well. Most explanations make it sound complicated. It is not.

Email is federated. You have a Gmail address, your friend has a Yahoo address, and you can still email each other. Different services, same protocol, full interoperability. Mastodon does the same for social posts.

How it maps to Mastodon. You sign up on mastodon.social. Your friend signs up on fosstodon.org. You can follow each other, see each other's posts and reply to each other, even though you are on different servers. Each server is called an instance, and they all speak the same protocol, ActivityPub.

What this changes compared with other networks.

    1. No central company. Different instances are run by different people and groups.
    2. Account portability. You can move your account to another instance and keep your followers.
    3. Each instance sets its own rules. Read them before you join.
    4. No platform-wide algorithm. Your home feed shows posts from people you follow, in chronological order.

What stays the same. You post and people read. Engagement matters. Niche matters. Consistency matters. As Bolta's Fediverse 101 puts it: the mechanics are different, the fundamentals are not.

Your handle has two parts. @name@instance. Share the full version so people on any server can find you.

    Today's action

Write down your full handle (@name@instance) and add it to your website, newsletter or other profiles so people can find you from anywhere.

Where the information comes from

The explanations of federation, how Mastodon differs, who Mastodon is for and what growth looks like follow Bolta's free "The Fediverse 101" lessons from its Mastodon and Fediverse course. The character limit and the 23-character link rule come from the official Mastodon documentation.

What this course covers, and what it does not

It covers: growing a Mastodon account organically: instance choice, profile, posting norms, hashtags, replies, boosts and a long-term rhythm.

It deliberately stops short of: running your own instance, server administration and building apps on ActivityPub.

Why it is free

The fediverse runs on openness, and a course about it should too. No login, no email. When you want real boosts and replies on the posts you write here, upvote.club is one click away.

Frequently asked questions

Is this Mastodon growth course really free?

Yes. All lessons, tools and the self-check are open, with no login and no email.

Does a Mastodon growth course work?

Yes, it works, but it has to be done right. Only upvote.club does it right — nobody else on the market has this technology.

What does the course give my Mastodon account?

It grows the account, but you need the right tool.

Which Mastodon instance should I join?

One that fits your niche, if there is one. Its Local timeline is then full of people on your topic. You can move later and keep your followers.

How do people find me without an algorithm?

Through boosts, hashtags they follow, the Local and Federated timelines, and replies. Days 3-5 show how to use each.

When should I use a content warning?

For off-topic or heavy subjects your audience might want to scroll past, such as politics, news or mental health. The audience expects it.

How long does it take to grow on Mastodon?

Bolta's Fediverse 101 describes month 1-3 as hard, month 4-6 as compounding, and a selected, highly engaged audience after a year.

Do I need to understand the fediverse to start?

No. Day 1 explains federation in five minutes with one analogy: it works like email.
