Reddit formatting cheat sheet
Every construct Reddit renders, with the Markdown to type.
| Format | You type | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Bold | bold text | two asterisks each side |
| Italic | italic text | one asterisk each side |
| Crossed-out | two tildes each side | |
| Spoiler | >!hidden until clicked!< | no spaces inside the markers |
| Superscript | E = mc^2 or ^(a phrase) | not in the Fancy Pants editor |
| Quote | > quoted text | stack > to nest |
| Link | text | a bare URL links on its own |
| Table | | a | b | | needs Markdown mode on mobile |
| Empty line that stays | | Reddit collapses stacked blank lines |
How Reddit handles line breaks
A blank line starts a new paragraph everywhere. Inside a paragraph, new Reddit and the apps break on a single Enter, while old Reddit needs two spaces at the end of the line. Reddit collapses stacked blank lines, so use the invisible entity when you need a bigger gap.
Formatting that reads native in a subreddit
Bullets and quotes help, but a post heavy with headings and bold reads like a landing page. Lead with context, break long text into short paragraphs for phone readers, and keep links optional rather than the point of the post.
