A worked example
Take a typical iPhone photo, 4032 x 3024 (4:3):
- Video thumbnail (1280 x 720): the full width is kept, the height is cut to 2268 px, so about 25% of the height is lost before scaling to 1280 x 720.
- Channel banner (2560 x 1440): the full width is kept, the height is cut to 2268 px, so about 25% of the height is lost before scaling to 2560 x 1440.

What the tool is doing
It reads the pixel size of your file in the browser, draws it on a canvas, crops it to the shape you pick and re-encodes it at the exact export size. There is no upload request, and metadata such as EXIF location is not carried over.
Thumbnails are judged small
On the mobile home feed and in the suggested sidebar a thumbnail shows at a fraction of its 1280 x 720 export size, next to a title cut to about 40 to 60 characters. Large text, one clear subject and strong contrast read at that size; fine detail does not.
