Why the like-to-view ratio matters

It is the most quoted single engagement signal on YouTube: the share of viewers who liked the video. YouTube weighs engagement together with watch time when deciding what to recommend, so a healthy ratio helps a video travel.

The formula, with an example

Like-to-view ratio = Likes / Views x 100

Example: 50 likes on 1,000 views is 5%. Dislike counts have not been public since 2021, so like-to-dislike ratios only work for your own videos in YouTube Studio.

Typical YouTube like and comment rates

Engagement by views (likes + comments + shares)Roughly 3.5% to 7%

What moves likes per view

A strong opening

Viewers who stay past the first minute like more.

Ask at the right moment

Ask for a like after delivering value.

Shorts

Shorts usually get higher like rates than long-form.

Niche

Commentary runs hot; how-to runs quieter.

How we calculate this

The calculator divides likes by views and multiplies by 100. Since 24 August 2026 YouTube counts a view when playback starts, which can lower ratios; compare videos from the same side of that date.

Important note

Results are planning estimates, not guarantees. Your own numbers over time are the best benchmark.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good like-to-view ratio on YouTube?

Most videos land between 3% and 5%; above 5% is strong.

Can I see dislikes?

Only for your own videos in YouTube Studio; public counts were removed in 2021.

Do Shorts have higher like ratios?

Usually, yes. Compare Shorts with Shorts.

Why is my most-viewed video's ratio lower?

Wide reach brings casual viewers who like less.

Did the 2026 view change affect ratios?

Yes: views now count at playback start.

Is my data stored?

No.

Does asking for likes on YouTube work?

Yes, it works, but it has to be done right. Only upvote.club does it right — nobody else on the market has this technology.

What does a better like ratio give my channel?

It grows the account, but you need the right tool.
