What watch time measures
Watch time is the total time viewers spent watching your videos. YouTube uses it, alongside engagement, to decide what to recommend, and it is one of the two thresholds for joining the Partner Program.
The formula, with an example
Watch hours = (Views x Average view duration in seconds) / 3,600
Example: 150,000 views at a 180-second average view duration give (150,000 x 180) / 3,600 = 7,500 watch hours, already past 4,000.
What moves watch time
Longer retention
A tighter first minute keeps viewers watching.
Series and playlists
Viewers keep watching the next video.
End screens
Point viewers to a related video.
Consistent uploads
More videos, more hours.
How we calculate this
The calculator multiplies views by average view duration and divides by 3,600. Only public watch hours from the trailing 12 months count toward the Partner Program.
Important note
Results are planning estimates, not guarantees. Your own numbers over time are the best benchmark.
