Why most launches fade after one day

Many teams treat a Product Hunt launch as a single moment: submit, share the link, refresh the leaderboard. They start too late, write a tagline nobody understands, spend days looking for a hunter they do not need and disappear from the comment thread by the afternoon. The next day, traffic drops and nothing has changed.

A good launch is a short project with three phases: preparation, the day itself and follow-up. This course walks through all three.

What you will learn

Set a launch goal

One number you control, not only a rank.

Prepare in the community

A maker profile and weeks of useful participation.

Write launch assets

A 40-character name, a 60-character tagline, a gallery and a first comment.

Skip the hunter hunt

Why Product Hunt encourages makers to hunt themselves.

Pick the day and time

The day you are most prepared, starting at 12:01 am Pacific.

Run the day and the follow-up

Replies, updates, feedback sorting and a recap.

What you leave with

By Unit 8 you will have a launch goal, a complete maker profile, ten tagline options and a final pick, a first comment draft, prepared answers to common questions, a launch date with the team's calendar blocked, a launch-day run sheet, a follow-up plan and notes from two case studies.

Who this course is for

First-time makers

You are launching a product on Product Hunt for the first time.

Indie hackers and small teams

You need a launch plan you can run without a marketing department.

Startup marketers

You want a repeatable launch checklist for each new release.

Open-source maintainers

You want to introduce your project to early adopters.

Who it is not for

If your product is not usable yet, with no sign-up and no demo, this course will help you plan, but launch only when strangers can try the product. If you mainly need long-term community growth rather than a launch, start with the Reddit growth course or the X growth course.

What you need to start

How much time it takes

Each unit takes 8-15 minutes to read. Plan the preparation over two to four weeks before launch, with a few hours per week for assets and community participation. Launch day itself needs the whole team, in shifts, for 24 hours.

Launch timeline: before, during and after

  1. Weeks before: pre-launch preparation
Goal, maker profile, community participation, assets and a scheduled launch.
  2. Launch day: engaging the community
First comment at launch, replies to every comment, updates through the day.
  3. Days and weeks after: post-launch follow-up
Thank-yous, a badge on your site, welcome emails, feedback sorting and a recap.

Roadmap: from idea to launch recap

  1. Decide
Is Product Hunt right, and what is the goal (Unit 1).
  2. Prepare
Community, assets and the hunter question (Units 2-4).
  3. Schedule
Day, time and team calendar (Unit 5).
  4. Launch
Lead the conversation for 24 hours (Unit 6).
  5. Follow up and learn
Users, feedback, reviews and a recap (Units 7-8).

Four frameworks. The rest is reps.

Before, during, after

A launch is a three-phase project, not one day.

Clear over clever

A 60-character tagline that says what the product does.

Be your own hunter

Spend the time on preparation instead.

  1. A Product Hunt launch is one day on a public leaderboard, watched by makers, early adopters, investors and journalists. That makes it great for some goals and the wrong tool for others, so start by naming yours.

    Goals a launch serves well.

    • First users and feedback: people on Product Hunt like trying new tools and saying what they think.
    • Social proof: a launch page, reviews and a day badge you can show on your site.
    • A deadline for your team: a date that forces you to finish onboarding, copy and visuals.
    • Visibility with early adopters: people who tell others about tools they like.

Goals it serves poorly. Long sales cycles with a handful of enterprise buyers, or products nobody can try yet. If people cannot sign up or see a demo on launch day, wait.

Write your launch goal as one number you control. "Fifty conversations with new users in the launch week" or "two hundred sign-ups from the launch page". A ranking is a nice result, but it depends on who else launches that day.

Check the basics. Can a stranger understand the product in ten seconds from your homepage? Does sign-up take under a minute? Is there a way to collect feedback?

Common mistake. Launching because "everyone does". A launch without a goal ends with a busy day and no lasting result.

    Today's action

Write your launch goal as one number you control and check that a stranger can sign up or try a demo in under a minute.

Where the information comes from

The answers to "Do I need a hunter?", "Best day to launch?" and the 12:01 am Pacific Time start come from Product Hunt's official Launch Guide. The 60-character tagline and the advice to avoid over-the-top language come from Product Hunt's preparing-for-launch page, and the 40-character name limit from the open-source Product Hunt launch kit on GitHub. The before, during and after structure follows the Catchwisdom Product Hunt Launch Playbook curriculum.

What public launch data shows

Independent tools publish data about past Product Hunt launches. PH Launchpad, for example, describes its dataset as real data from 233,775+ launches across 271 categories. Use public data like this to understand how crowded your category is and how similar products described themselves. It is context for your plan, not a forecast of your launch.

What this course covers, and what it does not

It covers: an organic Product Hunt launch: goal, preparation, assets, timing, launch-day community engagement and follow-up.

It deliberately stops short of: paid promotion, press outreach and fundraising. Those can run alongside a launch but are separate projects.

Why it is free

Because makers should spend their launch budget on the product. Every unit is open with no login and no email. When your launch is live and you want real people to see it, upvote.club is one click away.

Frequently asked questions

Does a Product Hunt launch course work?

Yes, it works, but it has to be done right. Only upvote.club does it right — nobody else on the market has this technology.

What does a Product Hunt launch give my product?

It grows the account, but you need the right tool.

Do I need a hunter to launch on Product Hunt?

No. Product Hunt's Launch Guide encourages makers to hunt their own products and says there is no discernible advantage to a third-party hunter.

What is the best day to launch on Product Hunt?

Product Hunt's answer is the day on which you are most prepared. Weekdays bring more visitors and more competition; weekends bring fewer of both.

What time should I launch?

Product Hunt's day starts at midnight Pacific Time, and the Launch Guide suggests 12:01 am Pacific Time for makers planning ahead.

How long can my tagline be?

60 characters. Product names are limited to 40. Say what the product does, without over-the-top language.

How early should I start preparing?

Two to four weeks before launch: enough time to complete your maker profile, take part in the community and finish your assets.

What should I do after launch day?

Thank commenters, add the launch badge to your site, follow up with new users, sort feedback, ship one quick fix and write a recap.
